Facebook wants more people on Facebook Protect to avoid a locked account
Things are tough in the world, to say the least. Unfortunately, as fun as social media is, it’s definitely a catalyst for spreading hatred and ill will across the globe. Because of this, locking your social media account is about as important as locking your house at night. Facebook wants to help you keep your data secure if your account is a high-risk account. These are accounts that get a lot of attention like celebrity accounts and influencers. This also goes for people like journalists who can constantly be targeted. The company sent out emails to a bunch of high-risk accounts asking them to set up Facebook Protect. If they don’t get Facebook Protect, they run the risk of having a locked account. Facebook Protect adds an extra layer of protection for the account much like two-factor authentication. This helps them avoid hacked accounts and stolen data.
The emails don’t look legitimate
While Facebook sent out a bunch of emails, people initially rejected them. Most people thought that the emails looked rather suspicious. Consequently, they ignored those emails, which is valid. The emails, most people remark, look just like phishing emails. A user posted a screenshot of their email, and it’s plain text without any graphics other than a small Facebook logo up top. It tells you that you need to activate Facebook Protect before March 17th, or your account will be locked. And Facebook is not taking any prisoners with this new policy. The company doesn’t give you the option to decline the offer and just accept the risk. If your account doesn’t have Facebook Protect, it’ll be locked until you enable it. The emails may look fake, but Meta’s head of security policy spoke on the subject. He reassured everyone that the emails came straight from Facebook. Popular users need to activate Facebook Protect if they don’t want their accounts locked.
