It is not releasing all the details on the new Pixel 6 yet, that will happen this fall. But the big news here is the Tensor SoC. Which is leaving us with more questions than answers. But the name comes from the “Tensor” chips that it uses in its data centers. Tensor will use at least a mobile TPU for AI operations and a new Titan M2 security chip. The rest of the SoC – CPU, GPU and the 5G modem – are all still a mystery right now.
That’s not all Google is teasing today
We know there will be two Pixel devices released later this fall. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, and Google has confirmed the design as well. Confirming what Jon Prosser showed off a few months ago. According to The Verge, who was at Mountain View and actually touched these phones (actually prototypes), both phones are glass sandwiches with fit-and-finish that are in-line with the other big competitors out there. Think Samsung, Huawei, and Apple. Google’s hardware chief, Rick Osterloh said that “we’ve definitely not been in the flagship tier for the past couple of years, this will be different.” Osterloh also notes that it “will certainly be a premium-priced product”. So that likely means it’ll be over $1,000. As for the specs that Google is releasing here, the Pixel 6 will have a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. While the Pixel 6 Pro has a 6.7-inch QHD+ display at 120Hz refresh. Google is also shining the light on the camera setup here, stating that there will be a new wide-angle main sensor, an ultrawide and a 4X optical-zoom folded telephoto lens on the Pro. While the Pixel 6 loses the telephoto camera. It’s good to see Google finally going with a new main sensor though. Expect Google to announce the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in late September or early October. As that is usually when Google does its fall event.
