IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio is 1.90:1, which is much taller than the squarer 1.43:1 format it traditionally uses. It is closer to the 16:9 ratio (1.77:1 equivalent) of TVs. This taller aspect ratio allows for up to 26 percent more picture on the screen. Meaning, you will notice smaller black bars at the top and bottom of the picture. While Marvel movies are generally wider, some sequences are also captured in the 1.90:1 format. For example, Black Widow has 22 minutes of footage in the taller aspect ratio (via). This allows for a taller picture in IMAX theaters. Some Marvel movies, meanwhile, are entirely shot in this format, including Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Now, with the latest collaboration between IMAX and Disney, these taller scenes will be available to watch on Disney+ as well. The following 13 Marvel movies will be available in IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio: Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow. Note that some titles may not be available in some regions.
This collaboration between IMAX and Disney will bring more perks in the future
In addition to supporting IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio on Disney+, the two companies will also collaborate for more perks in the future. They will bring more enhanced audio and visual technology to Disney+. This includes “immersive IMAX signature sound by DTS.” But for the time being, everyone’s waiting for the arrival of IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio on Disney+ on November 12. It also happens to be Disney+ Day, which celebrates the second anniversary of the streaming service. Disney has already announced that it will bring “new content, fan experiences, and more” to the platform on this day. This includes the streaming premiere of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Support for IMAX’s Expanded Aspect Ratio across more than a dozen of Marvel movies is another perk coming users’ way on Disney+ Day. If you’re a Disney+ subscriber, you might want to save the date for this special celebration.
