According to Ubisoft, development will be helmed by Ubisoft Toronto (which developed the most recent game in the series, Splinter Cell: Blacklist from 2013), and is going to be “built from the ground up.” That means players can probably expect a true reimagining of the game. Ubisoft is also using its own in-house Snowdrop Engine as the foundation. Compared to every other Splinter Cell game in the franchise which has used various generations of Epic’s Unreal Engine.
The Splinter Cell Remake is in the earliest stages of development
For fans of the series, it’s likely great to know that Ubisoft hasn’t abandoned it. But temper that excitement just a little bit because the game is nowhere near ready. Ubisoft says the game is in the earliest stages of development. Which probably means a release is at least a year or two down the road. All that said, while Ubisoft still considers this game a remake and not a remaster, it doesn’t appear to be changing a whole lot.
The game will remain true to the series’ roots
Ubisoft isn’t looking to reinvent the wheel, but it does want to bring the franchise forward to meet the tastes of modern gamers. Ubisoft’s Matt West says that the Splinter Cell Remake will be a linear game just like the original. As opposed to open world like some other franchises have done. Ubisoft is also planning to update the visuals and some of the design elements to match player comfort and expectations. Additionally, the studio notes that it’s “building a solid base for the future of the franchise” with this remake. So, it sounds like Sam Fisher is going to be appearing in more than just one new title.
