Wordle launched late last year, and it quickly became a sensation. You guess the secret word of the day by using the colored blocks. It’s a simple game and it took off rather quickly. Because of its success, it was actually bought up by The New York Times.

Because of that, Wordle might have ads soon

The decision to ads on ads didn’t come from the developer behind Wordle. In fact, this is coming from the NYT itself. Currently, the publication is planning on expanding its ad business across its different properties. A large amount of its income flows in through subscriptions. However, many more readers of the New York Times don’t have a subscription. To help generate more income from those users, the company is going to start showing more advertisements on its properties. When the New York Times was asked whether it was going to be adding advertisements to Wordle back in January, the company responded “Not at this time.” This meant that ads were going to make it to the platform eventually. At the moment, we don’t know when the ads will land on Wordle. It could be tomorrow or it could be next month. One thing we do know is that adding advertisements to Wordle should bring in some serious revenue for the New York Times.

This might not be all that bad

The thought of ads on any platform seems scary for any end user. However looking at the Wordle site, ads don’t seem all that bad. The thing is that Wordle is pretty bare-bones. It’s a lot of empty space. One could put an ad or two and not interrupt any of the gameplay. When this does happen, people won’t like it, but no one will really be affected.
